The annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, began in 1972, with only 13 balloons launching from a shopping mall parking lot, and now boasts a 365 acre Balloon Fiesta Park, with over 600 participating balloons annually - the largest balloon event in the world! It is a world-renowned event, ideal for families, which has occurred in the first week in October, for the past three decades. It is a very picturesque and photogenic event attracting thousands of visitors each year. The Balloon Fiesta Park is located on Alameda Boulevard, one mile west of Interstate 25. The launches are always early events, and traffic congestion should be anticipated; gates open at 4:00 am, and it's best to get there before 6:00 am, or you will have traffic delays.
