The Alpine Loop Scenic Byway covers 65 miles of dirt roads between Lake City, Silverton, and Ouray. This outstanding backcountry byway accesses public lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management in the heart of the rugged San Juan Mountains. The Uncompahgre Wilderness, the American Flats Wilderness, and the Red Cloud and Handies Peak Wilderness Study Areas can all be accessed from the Alpine Loop Scenic Byway. Hikers can enjoy trails to five of Colorado’s 14,000-foot peaks (Uncompahgre, Wetterhorn, Red Cloud, Sunshine, and Handies), as well as many additional miles of horse and hiker trails. OHV enthusiasts can challenge their skills on roads that access spectacular alpine scenery, the remnants of our Rocky Mountain mining heritage, and two of the highest mountain passes in the state: Cinnamon and Engineer. High clearance and 4WD are necessary to complete the Alpine Loop.
