Aztec Museum and Pioneer Village

The Aztec Museum was founded in 1974 and is located in the historic Aztec City Hall and fire station buildings and allows visitors to experience pioneer life in the American West. The museum houses many artifacts from the pioneer days of the 1880's to present day and many Native American artifacts. The museum also houses an extensive collection of oil and gas well drilling equipment in the Atwood Annex.

The Pioneer Village is a collection of 12 buildings that were moved or built on site to resemble structures in the early part of the 20th century. The Village includes: Old Aztec Jail, Tinsmith and Print Shop, Denver and Rio Grande Railroad Caboose, Blacksmith and Carpentry Shop, Log Cabin, Citizens Bank, Farmhouse, The Village Church, School House, Magistrate’s Office, Post Office with a General Store, and Doctor’s Office. Each structure contains wonderful historical items and displays related to the use of the building.

The Aztec Museum is also the starting point for the Aztec Historic District Self-Guided Walking Tour. The tour takes the visitor down Historic Main Street and into several historic neighborhoods. The tour book is found at the Museum Gift Shop.
