B. Emerson Kitsman Navajo Landscape Painter
Name of Person: B. Emerson Kitsman
B. Emerson Kitsman is a Navajo artist living in Tohatchi, New Mexico. Bobbi is a plain air landscape painter and avid student of the land and geography of the Navajo Nation. She is also an accomplished print-maker, writer, and photographer. Emerson-Kitsman is also a teacher, always willing to do printmaking workshops and take interested students out into the landscape to learn about the history of the land and its people–and paint while you're there.
Emerson Kitsman grew up in Church Rock, New Mexico and eventually Tohatchi, New Mexico where she now resides. She has roamed the furthest regions of the Navajo reservation, painting some of the most iconic places in Navajo country.
Bobbi has been an artist all her life, selling her first painting at the age of seven. She attended the Institute of American Indian Arts as well as the University of New Mexico and Colorado. She works and resides in Tohatchi, New Mexico and is a member of the Navajo Masters Painters Group.
Bobbi has taught several workshops for local schools and interested individuals, including the local church in Tohatchi and schools in and around Gallup. In 2008, a documentary about her return to the reservation entitled A Return Home, was showcased at film festivals around the nation and was awarded the Governor's Cup Award later that year.
