Enjoy the nearby arch then really explore its mesa top. This trail hugs the sandstone cliff's rim and gives a grand view of the lava flows, the distant cinder cones, and the setting sun. The elevation averages 7300 feet in Ponderosa Pine, Pinyon, and Juniper. At trails end is a north view and a glimpse of La Ventana Arch. (Note that the north end of the trail is before the view of the arch.) 

After a rain shower the depressions in the sandstone, tinajas, may fill with water. If you are lucky, you will see amazing creatures in and around them.

Hike the entire 7 miles or just take a stroll from the picnic area to the top of the cliffs for the grand view.

From the arch head 4 miles south on NM-117 to the trailhead at the entrance to the South Narrows Picnic Area.

Vertical Gain or Loss: The total elevation change is under 300 feet

Trail Distance: 3.5 miles in, then 3.5 miles out on the same trail
