BLM El Malpais NCA - Volcan Cerro Rendija
If you have seen a Hawaiian shield volcano, then this will be familiar. The summit is 500 feet above the surrounding area. There is a large "rendija"–crack–running north-south for over a mile from its southern base to the summit. Following the crack to the summit means walking in a slightly more shaded forest of Ponderosa Pine, Pinyon, and Juniper. There are steep lava walls to climb, if you stay in the ravine and enjoy the lush summer grasses and flowers. It is easier going on the east rim of the ravine. There are no marked trails, so use your compass and topographic map or satellite photo; or use a GPS. Going in and out from the southern road could offer as little as a two mile round-trip hike. Or you can descend the summit and return a different path on the east flank for a total distance of your choosing.
Hiking, Wildlife Viewing, Forest, Grand Vistas, Volcanology
There are no formal trails. Three to four-season access is limited by impassible roads in sustained rain or snow. Note that some private land exists to the west and on both sides of the access road. From State Road 53 go south on The Chain of Craters Byway, County Road 42. Pass the Big Tubes road at approximately 5 miles and continue another 2 miles to the next road to the east. Head east approximately 1 mile and past the private property signs and park on BLM land. Hike north until you find the southern end of the crack. Bicycles and motorized vehicles are limited to designated roads.
