Bloomfield Senior Citizens Center

The Bloomfiled Senior Citizen's Center
Bloofmield Senior Citizen's Center Community Garden

The Bloomfield Senior Citizens Center opened a community garden behind the center in 2008. This garden began as an effort to provide produce to the senior center in order to subsidize the state funding the center receives for in- house and home delivered meals to seniors in San Juan County. The program also focused on inter-generational activities by involving the Bloomfield Library Summer Reading Program children in all aspects of the garden such as planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting.

This garden, while providing food for the Bloomfield Senior Center, provides a valuable educational opportunity for seniors, adults and children alike. We encourage parents and children to come and help out in the garden in order to learn more about sustainable living through gardening as well as the nutritious value of growing our own food. It is also a great way to participate in the community by helping to provide food for senior citizens. The garden is totally organic and the starter plants are provided by the Aztec, NM High School Agricultural Program as well as from San Juan College in Farmington, NM.

How to Participate

The public is invited to participate in the Community Garden Project at the Bloomfield Senior Center in any way they feel they can. There is always something to do in the garden. We have four large compost sites that always need turning, weeding (both the garden and on the site), building more raised beds, watering, plant trimming, harvesting, and taking the garden down at the end of the growing season. The garden is open from May through October yearly.
