Borrego Pass Trading Post
Borrego Pass Trading Post was once a place for the local Navajo to trade and pawn their rugs and silver goods, such as jewelry, for necessities. The Trading Post still buys Navajo crafts for its gift shop.
Borrego Pass Trading Post is significant because it's one of the few trading posts still in operation in the Four Corners area.
On a national level, the trading post is important because the Mormons first started trading with the Navajo. The chapel that stands next to the trading post was also one of the first Mormon chapels built.
The old trading post, located about 8 miles northeast of Crownpoint, is situated under nearby cliffs with round, vertical shapes that resemble people like elders sitting in a row and keeping watch of empty valley across the newly paved road. The land scape is stunning. Lillian Makeda and Dr. Klara B. Kelly co-wrote the nomination for the trading post, which was listed in the state register as a historic placed on October 15, 2010.
