The Crownpoint Rug Weavers Association is a group of Navajo weavers from all across the southwest. Once a month the association holds the Crownpoint Navajo Rug Auction where 300 to 400 quality handmade authentic Navajo rugs are put up for auction. The first auction was held in 1968, since then the Crownpoint Rug Auction has become the primary rug auction for contemporary Navajo rugs.

Full Explanation

Attending the world famous Crownpoint Navajo Rug Auction is an amazing experince.  It is an opportunity for buyers from all over the world to purchase directly from Navajo weavers.  Once a month, Navajo weavers travel to Crownpoint, New Mexico to sell their decorative rugs at the auction inside the Crownpoint Elementary School. The auctions are typically held on the second Friday of the month and begin 7:00 P.M.

Before the auction from 4:00 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. the Rug Viewing is held. Here buyers can examine all of the rugs brought to auction, this hands-on review of the rugs encourages buyers to inspect the qualitity of the rugs. Some will sell for $50 or less while others sell for thousands of dollars.

Native American artisans are also at the Crownpoint Elementary School selling jewelry, pottery, beadwork and traditional foods, once again providing visitors with the opportunity to purchase goods directly from Navajo artisans.

Crownpoint New Mexico is a small community with no accomodations. The closest cities with lodging are Farmington and Gallup. Visit www.crownpointrugauction.com for directions and additional information.
