Four Corners School of Outdoor Education
Our mission is to create lifelong learning experiences about the Colorado Plateau bio region (Southern Utah, Southwest Colorado, Northwest New Mexico and Northern Arizona) for people of all ages and backgrounds through education, service, adventure, and conservation programs. Our vision is to build a diverse community of people who are committed to conserving the natural and cultural treasures of the Colorado Plateau. We are about to build our new campus, The Canyon Country Discovery Center.
Since 1984, Four Corners School of Outdoor Education has provided a wide range of place-based outdoor education programs for some 88,880 participants, ranging in age from six to ninety. FCS has provided over 74,100 hours of youth and adult service on public lands, 769,000 hours of student/youth outdoor education, 270,000 hours of adult outdoor education, and 110,800 hours of teacher training in outdoor education. The School has awarded 200 teacher scholarships for our outdoor programs; repaired or rehabilitated hundreds of miles of roads, springs, and trails; and worked to protect over 28 archaeological sites on public lands.
FCS’ work was honored 18 times locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally; in1992 by the National Wildlife Federation for work on grazing reform, in 1993 by the Utah Wildlife Society for Peregrine Falcon research, in 1995 by the U.S. Forest Service for significant archaeological excavations on the Colorado Plateau, in 1994 and 1999 by the Utah Society for Environmental Education as the Environmental Education Program of the Year, in 1999 by the Coleman Company as the Outdoor Education and Recreation Program of the Year, in 2001 with the Governor of Utah’s Medal for Science and Technology (in science education), in 2001 by the North American Association for Environmental Education for Outstanding Service to Environmental Education at the Regional Level, in 2001 with National Public Radio’s E-Chievement Award, in 2002 with the Olympics Committee Spirit of the Land Environmental Education Award, in 2003 with the Prescott College Desert Star Award, in 2003 with the Utah Society for Environmental Education as the Environmental Educator of the Year award, in 2004 with the Governor of Utah’s Watershed Improvement Award and with the BLM’s State of Utah Public Lands Volunteer of the Year award, in 2005 with the Utah Society for Environmental Education’s Program and Educator of the Year awards, in 2008 by as one of National Geographic Traveler Magazine 50 Great Tours of a Lifetime for our Southwest Safari Camps, and 2009 with Public Lands Service award from The Corps Network for our Dolores River Restoration Project.
We achieve our mission and vision through four education, service, adventure, and conservation programs:
1-Canyon Country Youth Corps-an employment, education, and leadership program for primarily Navajo youth ages 14-24, who complete public lands service projects on the Colorado Plateau.
2-Southwest Ed-Ventures-adventure education trips for all ages throughout the Colorado Plateau, whose net income supports the other three programs of FCS.
3-The Bioregional Outdoor Education Project (BOEP)-a place-based environmental education training program for all K-8 schools and teachers on the Colorado Plateau.
4-The upcoming Discovery Institute for Conservation Education-a place-based learning center on and about the Colorado Plateau.
