Name of Person: Julie Wagner

Julie Wagner's studio is housed in an old adobe home, bordering the Carson National Forest in the small, charming village of El Rito.  She is a professional artist, painting, sculpting and making artists books.  She welcomes visitors, and is open by appointment.

Julie Wagner moved to northern New Mexico in 1972, with her blacksmith husband, Michael Hennerty.  They raised their daughter in El Rito, and have gardened and raised chickens, ducks, and rabbits, along with a menagerie of dogs and cats.

She has been a working artist for 50 years, pursuing her passion for painting the natural world she has come to know well. She explores the landscapes that surround her home, drawing and painting the plants and life forms she discovers.  Her work is based on observation of natural forms, as well as maps, diagrams and scientific drawings. 

Julie has actively participated in the El Rito Studio Tour for over 20 years. She has coordinated and taught workshops in drawing and bookmaking for children and adults at the El Rito Library and the El Rito Elementary School.  She is available to teach bookmaking workshops to groups and individuals by appointment.
