Guests of Kokopelli's Cave Bed & Breakfast find serenity, tranquility, and peace as well as excitement, intrigue and fascination! Kokopelli's Cave is located 70 feet underground and 280 feet above the La Plata River floor.

This remote 1,650-square-foot cave features a dining room, den and replica kiva, cascading waterfall-style shower/jacuzzi tub, southwestern style furniture, a fully loaded and stocked kitchen, and a barbeque grill out on the balcony. There is also a large living room with a futon that can sleep two additional people. With the exception of the bedroom and bathroom all of the rooms are located around a large central sandstone pillar which separates the cave into its various rooms. The rooms flow from one to the other with no intervening doors except the bathroom.

The entrance to the cave is located in the vertical cliffs of the Tertiary Ojo Alamo Sandstone and is reached by walking down a sloping path and steps cut into the sandstone along the pathway. There is a short ladder at the bottom of the path with three wooden rungs that land on the flagstone porch and the front entrance to Kokopelli’s Cave.

From the entrance of the cave as well as the cliff tops guests are amazed by the view, southwestern sunsets and wide open blue skies. The panoramic view of the four corners includes Shiprock Pennacle, the Chuska mountains of the Navajo Indian reservation, the Carrizo Mountains of northeastern Arizona and to the north the often snowcapped La Plata and San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado.

Locally or Family Owned Business Notes

The cave is not a natural cave, it was originally intended to be a unique geologic office for owner Bruce Black, a consulting geologist. Bruce had the cave blasted out and then he and his son drilled the holes for ventilation and electrical access lines, using their drilling rig. In 1996, the structure was ready for occupation and in June 1997 the cave was opened as a bed and continental breakfast.
