Los Alamos Historical Museum Docent

A cozy fireplace helps docents welcome visitors to the Los Alamos Historical Museum

The Los Alamos Historical Museum could not do all that we do without our wonderful volunteers. Docents staff the museum, answer visitor questions about our history and our community, sell items in the Museum Shop, and generally help us take care of the place. Shifts in the Museum are weekdays 9:30-1:00 or 1:00-4:30 (summer) and 10:00-1:00 or 1:00-4:00 (winter). Most volunteers take two shifts a month, although some serve weekly. Schedules are flexible. We work with you if you have a vacation, company, appointments, or other events.

Types of Volunteer Work Needed

Volunteers are need to staff the Museum Shop and answer visitor questions. Some computer skills are required. The sales system in the museum uses a computer rather than a cash register, so some familiarity with computers is necessary.

We’ll train you and help you. The museum staff offers hands-on training to help new docents become familiar with the museum. We also have an extensive docent handbook with valuable historical information to help you answer visitor questions. Museum staff members are always available to help, too.

At times, the museum can be busy. Docents need to be able to interact with visitors, make sales, and give directions (sometimes all at once!). Some times of the year, though, visitation is low, and docents can read, knit, or engage in other quiet, non-intrusive activities.

Appropriate Ages for Volunteer Opportunity: 16 and up
