Los Rios River Runners is New Mexico's oldest and largest rafting company with nearly forty years' experience running the rivers of northern New Mexico. With more access to more stretches of river than any other company, Los Rios offers half-day, full-day and overnight adventures on the Rio Grande and the Rio Chama, near Taos and Santa Fe, as well as a unique Native Cultures Feast & Float trip on the calm waters near Albuquerque. From the high-adrenaline, world-class rapids of the Taos Box (available as a full-day adventure or as part of a 2 or 3-day overnight camping trip), to the family fun rapids of the Racecourse and Lower Gorge, to the mellow water and lush green meadows of the Orilla Verde, Los Rios offers something for everyone. Be part of a precision team threading through the whitewater; paddle your own funyak at lower water levels; or simply lie back and relax as you are rowed down the river. Los Rios guides are highly trained and knowledgeable about local history and the beautiful wildernesses where they spend their ways.

Areas of Service and Expertise

Los Rios is permitted by the federal government to run commercial trips on the Rio Grande and the Rio Chama. We provide guided trips in rafts and/or funyaks. All full-day trips are catered generously with a build-your-own sandwich buffet lunch, including a variety of meats, breads and cheeses and vegetables, all the trimmings, chips & salsa, fruit and cookies. Overnights are lavishly catered by our campfire gourmets, who produce mixed grills, fabulous stir-fries, hearty breakfasts and cakes baked riverside as firelight illuminates the scene and the constellations wheel overhead.

Types of Experiences and Trips Provided

Full-day trips

The Taos Box: world-class white-knuckle whitewater, Class 4 rating.

Lower Gorge:  Orilla Verde plus the Racecourse (see below).

Middle Box: a funyak trip in lower water levels.  Very remote wilderness, extremely limited access.

Half-day trips

Racecourse: family fun rapids, minimum recommended age 6 (higher at higher water levels).

Orilla Verde: mellow float, suitable for seniors and young children.

Overnight trips: (NOTE:  ALL CAMPING AND RAFTING GEAR IS INCLUDED.  NO HIDDEN CHARGES!)

Rio Chama: gorgeous multicolored sandstone canyon, easy Class 3 rapids, dinosaur footprints, ghost town, fabulous side hikes.  2-day or, better, 3-day overnight.  Perfect for families and anyone who just wants to get away from the modern world.
3-day Rio Grande:  The Middle Box, Taos Box, and Lower Gorge.  The first night's camp is in the wilderness of the Box: remote and rugged, but with comfortable semi-inflatable paco pads that promote a great night's sleep.
Wild Rio Grande:  Middle Box & Taos Box.  Wilderness camp.  Maximum wilderness.
Whitewater Rio Grande: Taos Box & Lower Gorge.  We camp in the meadows of the Orilla Verde near developed campgrounds with flush toilets.  Maximum whitewater.

 ADA Accessibility Notes

Some of our trips are suitable for those with physical challenges.  Please phone us to discuss your requirements.

 Eco-Friendly Notes

Los Rios takes its role seriously as steward of the wilderness. We expose people to the natural environment in all its majesty, teach them the fascinating facts of natural history, and educate them about the problems facing the fragile wilderness and wildlife. We give people hands-on experience of the natural world, which often results in an emotional connection that lasts a lifetime.

Our trips are as low-impact as possible. We educate all our guests in the motto: Leave nothing but footprints; take nothing but memories.

Los Rios is an active provider of wilderness education for various local groups.  We support the Rivers & Birds program, which educates schoolchildren to be good stewards of our uniquely beautiful wilderness environment, as well as several other conservation-minded nonprofit entities.
