Meteor Crater

This is the worlds largest meteor crater - about 1 mile across, 2.4 miles in circumference and 550 feet deep. The crater, created by an impact with the equivalent of 20 million tons of TNT was created about 49,000 years ago, and continues to be managed as a private enterprise since it was discovered in 1902. It is estimated that the meteor was 150 feet in diameter and weighed about 300,000 tons; the largest fragment found weighs at 3/4 of a ton, and is viewable at the Visitor Center. The park includes outdoor observation trails, air conditioned indoor viewing, wide screen movie theater, interactive discovery center, unique gift and rock shop, and Astronaut Memorial Park at the modern Visitor Center located on the crater rim. The park is located off Interstate 40 at exit 233, 35 miles east of Flagstaff and 20 miles west of Winslow in Arizona, and about 6 miles (paved) south from I-40.
