Name of Person: Miya Endo

Miya Endo of Miya Pottery is an independent full-time potter specializing in wheel-thrown functional stoneware and fine raku.

Miya Pottery is nestled in the hills of Dixon in northern New Mexico at the edge of high desert wilderness where Miya can enjoy the serene natural environment needed to inspire her beautifully simple and sensitive wares. She shares her own culture by creating high-fired stoneware that follows the Japanese tradition of specific designs for specific foods and a unique collection of raku vessels. Raku, with its roots in ancient Japan, is a quick, hands-on firing technique that creates spontaneous patterns of crackle and color on its glazed surfaces and makes for eye-catching, thought-provoking decorative ware.

Miya moved to New Mexico from Indiana in 1999 in search of a place to pursue her life as a potter, a place that encourages healthy, natural living and freedom of expression. She is grateful to be in Dixon, a small rural farming village rich with its family of creative artistic spirits. As a potter, she can live and work amongst friends and neighbors, and, by melding business and home, can stay closely connected to the community.

Dixon is located along the Embudo River, a tributary to the Rio Grande, in a lush valley known for its organic farms and fruit tree orchards. It is surrounded by scenic, accessible BLM land and is home to several fine wineries and galleries, a friendly neighborhood cafe, and a community-run cooperative market.
