Mule Canyon Ruin

Covered Kiva at Mule Canyon Ruin
The remains of a tower. Towers are believed to have been integral in the communications system used by the ancient residents to convey messages over long distances.
The exposed Kiva with part of the residence block visible in the background.

Mule Canyon Ruin lies along Utah Highway 95 and is easily accessible for all. It is directley adjacent to the Trail of the Ancients National Scenic Byway. The BLM has posted an informative sign board providing information about the pre-historic residents of the area. The parking area is large enough to accommodate a coach or large motor homes. The ruin consists of a tower and residence block. A paved walkway accesses the ruin. A pit toilet is available.

A day hike will take you into Mule Canyon itself. The canyon is accessed approximately 19 miles west of its junction with U.S. Highway 191. Because of the orientation of this canyon, there are ponderosa pines among the slickrock walls. Within the first four miles, there are about eight cultural sites. The route begins in the canyon bottom with very little elevational change, making an easy to moderate hike.

Hours Open: Year round

Time Period Represented: Ruins found in the canyon and on the surface date from over 700 years ago.

 ADA Accessibility Notes

Mule Canyon Ruin is ADA accessible.

 Pet Friendly Notes

Pets are allowed on the trails but visitors are asked to clean up after them in order to insure a positive experience for those following them. 100+ degrees Farenheit in summer months and ice falls and below freezing temperatures in the winter plus precipitous cliffs preclude safely allowing pets to run free. Care is recommended if traveling with pets. Carry enough water for your pet at all times of the year.
