Red River Valley, New Mexico
This viewpoint of the Red River Valley is from the Old Pass, the only entrance into Red River from the east until the 1960s. Families wanting to escape the heat of Texas and Oklahoma would brave the 2 miles and 8 steep switchbacks, often dragging a log behind to slow their descent. The Old Pass can be traveled today by 4x4, bike, hiking, and snowmobile. The top is a favorite family picnic place with the views of Wheeler Peak, New Mexico's highest mountain at 13,161 feet.
