Red Rock Park & Pyramid Rock Trail

Driving along Interstate 40 westbound between Grants and Gallup, travelers are treated to the visual tapestry of red rock mesas.  A main destination to experience and get on the rock is Red Rock Park.  Red Rock Park, with elevation from 6600 to 7487 feet and encompassing 640 acres, has a museum, outdoor arena, horse hotel, trails, and large campground equipped with electrical and water hookups, picnic areas, restrooms and showers.

The spectacular red cliffs which frame the Park on three sides began formation 205 million years ago, during the Mesozoic era, sometimes referred to as the Age of the Dinosaurs.
Several archeological sites in the Park record the presence of the Anasazi, a prehistoric farming culture which developed and persisted in the area from A.D. 300 to 1200. From 1700 to the present, the region has been sparsely inhabited by the Navajo Indians.

The Park provides the perfect backdrop to Gallup unique event schedule including the Gallup Inter-tribal Indian Ceremonial, Lions Club Rodeo, Red Rock Team Roping,  National Junior High Rodeo, and the Red Rock Balloon Rally.

The Park allows visitors access to hike to the top of Pyramid Rock and Churchrock - two features that define the high desert and provide a 360 degree view of the Four Corners.  The Pyramid Rock trail, Gallup's flagship trail, is a 3 mile round trip trail takes you past amazing rock formations and the summit is surprisingly large and roomy providing a breathtaking panoramic view of the beautiful surrounding landscape. The trail features the crafty and artistic work of the Gallup Youth Conservation Corps and was designed by world famous trail engineer, Strider Brown.  The trail has waysigns that describe the geographic, cultural, and historic aspects of the area.
