Rico Hot Springs

Geothermal Academy members visit the Rico Hot Springs hot tub
Natural hot spring on the west side of Dolores River

The Rico Hot Springs are situated next to the Dolores River, in between two settling ponds, just north of the historic mining town of Rico. In the 1980s locals connected a fiberglass hot tub to the hot springs that provides warm 100+ degree water. The hot springs were actually found by accident in the late 1970s when miners tapped the geothermal aquifer while drilling for core samples. Prior to that, there was no knowledge of the geothermal resource for at least 100 years.

The Rico Hot Springs tub is located along the San Juan Skyway, a National Scenic Byway. Soakers can enjoy views of the Dolores River, wetland habitat, Telescope Mountain and Expectation Peak.

Recreational Opportunities

The Town of Rico and the hot springs are best suited for quiet and contemplative sorts looking for relaxing and restorative recreational experiences in a ruggedly natural and historical environment. Hiking, mountain biking, back country skiing and snowshoeing opportunities are abundant in the surrounding forest service lands. The local historical society has a museum for mining and railroad buffs, and historic mining structures and buildings abound from Rico's heyday. Visitors can refuel on four star cuisine made from locally sourced meats and produce at the Rico Argentine Grille, located in the old miners boarding house now occupied by the Rico Hotel. And the High Ground Coffee shack serves breakfast, lunch, gourmet coffees and home baked goodies seven days a week from 6 am through lunch. On weekends you can spy a few locals when they go out for casual nightlife recreation at the historic Enterprise Bar and Grill.

Seasons Accessible

The hot springs are easily accessible year round. In summer you can drive up to the springs via the forest service road immediately north of the Town of Rico. In winter you can walk, ski or snowshoe if the road is too snowy.

Fees: free

J wrote on December 18, 2010: PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT! This is not a publicly maintained hot springs, please bring a trash bag to take out the trash you may encounter. Town of Rico now has recycling behind the School in Downtown where you can put the glass bottles, which are usually left behind by partiers/careless folks. Clothing is optional. 1 mile from town. Tub only holds 4 people comfortably, 6 very cozy. This is not regualily cleaned or maintained in any regular fashion. Due to the heavy mineral contents (iron), soak 20 minutes, jump in the river to close the skin pores and rinse, then repeat for longer soaks. Generally the tub runs 98-102 in the winter, some days hotter, up to 114 in the summer. (I've found the hot springs warmth coincides with the moon stages, warmer at new moon). Please respect each other's privacy and happily share the tub with locals who carry most of the burden of responsibility for cleaning up. Also, it always polite to ask before entering the tub that is occupied.
