The Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is a 1,280-foot-long cantilever truss bridge. (Cantilevers are structures that project horizontally into space, supported on only one end.). It crosses the approximately 650-foot-deep Rio Grande Gorge about ten miles northwest of Taos in Highway 64.

The bridge has sidewalks on each side and two lookovers. The views of the Rio Grande below and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the east are spectacular.

Built in 1965, the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is the fifth highest bridge in the United States. In 1966 it was named “Most Beautiful Steel Bridge.” The bridge has appeared in numerous films, such as “Natural Born Killers,” “Twins,” “She's Having a Baby,” “Wild Hogs,” and “Terminator Salvation.”

During most of the year, an ad-hoc arts and crafts market appears on the east side of the bridge. On the west side is a rest area with picnic tables, bathrooms, and an easy hiking trail.

The bridge has a sidewalk on each side.

Pets are allowed but must remain on leash.
