San Antonio Wilderness Study Area
Rolling grasslands dominate the 7050-acre San Antonio Wilderness Study (WSA) area sitting at the north end of 10,908-ft San Antonio Mountain. The Rio San Antonio cuts the WSA nearly in half as an inky gorge through local basalt layers. It is worth noting that New Mexico conservationists have recommended that the San Antonio WSA actually comprise 25,100 acres of wilderness quality lands.
Elevation in the unit ranges from 7,900 to 8,800 ft. There are no designated trails.
For wildlife viewers, this is an amazing spot. The open terrain provides incredible visibility. Everything from elk to mule deer, pronghorn, black bear, mountain lions, coyotes, prairie dogs, wild turkey, and raptors (bald eagles and peregrine falcons included!!) can be found here.
Hiking, hunting, camping, fishing, backpacking, wildlife viewing, cross-country skiing, snowshoing, exploration...
