Healthcare for Generations
 >

In 1910, Drs. G. W. Sammons and A. M. Smith opened an eight-bed hospital to serve the needs of the surrounding community. A century later, San Juan Regional Medical Center continues to provide healthcare to the Four Corners region with 250 licensed beds, nearly 1,700 compassionate employees, and a unique community corporation made up of about 180 members with a direct say in the hospital's future.

SJRMC's mission is to personalize healthcare and create enthusiasm and vitality in healing. As a hospital, employees follow five core values: Sacred Trust, Personal Reverence, Thoughtful Anticipation, Team Accountability, and Creative Vitality.

With cultural traditions and natural landscapes in mind, we have accommodated our hospital to meet the needs of our community. With the new tower entrance that faces the east, we've also built fresh-air balconies for new patient rooms, several circular meditation rooms, and an outdoor healing garden with the "Hope" sculpture to provide comfortable environments for our patients and visitors.

SJRMC is designated a Level III Trauma Center and provides air ambulance services with a helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft. The hospital seeks to meet the healthcare needs of the whole community through a very broad range of medical, surgical, and rehabilitation services. In addition to those services, the hospital also provides a childbirth center, cancer center, nephrology unit, pediatric unit, inpatient behavioral health unit, day surgery center, and extensive imaging and lab testing services.

We operate several offsite facitilies to bring primary and specialty care closer to home for our patients and community.

About three and a half years ago, the Green Team was formed to look for and implement innovations in reducing waste at San Juan Regional Medical Center.

Early in November, we donated—after the hard drives had been stripped of all information—about 8,000 pounds of electronic waste to a software company that recycles the material and donates any profit to Feed the Children. As of December 2010, employees used their Green Cups over 8,839 times, and we sent over 219,661 pounds of shredded paper to be recycled instead of to the landfill. On average, we’re recycling 3,250 pounds of single-stream waste and 7.5 tons of cardboard-waste each month.

Over the last two years, we saved 9.3 tons of reprocessed medical devices (while also saving close to $500,000 each year) that would have otherwise been sent to a landfill. We recycled thousands of pounds of batteries last year and saved over 2,500 pounds of compostable waste from going to a landfill in just one month.

These are impressive numbers and are attributed to the good work of not just the Green Team, but each of our employees who remain committed to environmental consciousness.
