Sand Island

One of the many images carved on the rock face at Sand Island.
An anthropomorphic figure on the rock art panel at Sand Island.

Not an island at all, this popular launch site for float trips on the San Juan River near Bluff is also the location of a large petroglyph panel displaying rock art dated to between 2000 and 800 years ago. The panel presents a comprehensive overview of the rock art found all along the San Juan River and displays a number of images of Kokopelli, the ancient flute player found throughout the Four Corners region. A campground operated by the BLM, picnic area, and boat launch are all found at Sand Island.

Recreational Opportunities

Boat launch, river rafting, swimming, hiking, and viewing pre-historic rock art panel.

Seasons Accessible

Year round.

Fees: BLM campground fees apply.

 Pet Friendly Notes
