Mesa Verde Country® has a strong agricultural tradition. The Ancestral Puebloans, the first agriculturalists in the area, farmed the valleys and the mesas of Montezuma County, including current-day Mesa Verde National Park, until around 1300 AD. Growing corn, beans, and squash, and raising turkeys, they laid the agricultural foundation for today's farmers, ranchers, and vintners who carry on this long tradition. For Mesa Verde Country®, agriculture is truly a cultural thing!

Activities at this Site

A visit to Mesa Verde Country® is not complete without experiencing the bounty of the area. Farmer’s Markets are an excellent way to taste, touch, and savor local flavors. Depending on the season, opportunities abound to U-pick apples, peaches, or pears; or wander a pumpkin patch and select the perfect one. Get up close and personal with an alpaca, or drive past fields of sunflowers turning their heads to the sun. Visit a Navajo-Churro Sheep Farm and learn about the on-going efforts to save this threatened breed of sheep.  Take part in an authentic cattle drive or purchase grass-fed beef or fresh lamb. Visit a winery and sample some incredible wines, or if you prefer beer, Mesa Verde Country® is also home to several microbreweries. We even have our own distillery.
