td wrote on December 14, 2010: Twelve miles from the nearest other structures in Mexican Hat, at the base of the Moki Dugway switchbacks sits a stone ranch house invisible from the highway yet only a quarter mile down the Valley of the Gods road. A mix of modern off-the-grid technology provides power, hot water and heat for the hand-built stone house and (converted) root cellar residences. Beams in the house were salvaged when the house was built in the early 1930's from a wooden oil rig built back east, shipped out to the area by rail, and abandoned about a mile from the house after pounding out its last dry hole. There isn't a better view from a porch anywhere in the four-corners, and it changes all day long. Nights bring out a spectacular display of stars visible in few other places. The interior is furnished in period style and is cozy and welcoming. Claire and Gary produce elegant and delicious breakfasts and meals and provide engaging conversation and recommendations for local travel and exploration. Valley of the Gods B&B is simply an extraordinary place to visit - stay 2 or 3 nights for a full experience.
