Wild Earth Llama Adventures

Llama Treking Adventures in
New Mexico’s Pristine Wilderness!

Wild Earth Llama Adventures offers fun and educational wilderness hiking trips in the southern Rocky Mountains and High Desert of New Mexico, near Taos and Santa Fe. Join us for a single day escape, or an overnight wilderness expedition. Our experienced guides and “llovable” llamas will help you create the wilderness adventure of a lifetime!

On the trail, gentle and sure-footed llamas carry the gear, leaving you free to enjoy the beauty and wonder of the New Mexico wilderness. Guests may choose to lead a llama, and see why these magnificent creatures have found a new home in the mountain and desert Southwest.

Hike through the lush alpine forests of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, discover hidden alpine lakes, and climb New Mexico's tallest peaks. Descend 800’ into New Mexico’s “Grand Canyon”, get your feet wet in the wild Rio Grande, and marvel at centuries old Petroglyphs, left by the early inhabitants of this diverse and enchanting landscape.

Local Naturalist Guides add to the experience, with interpertive insights into the the areas we explore. Learn about local ecology, geology and natural history, as well as wilderness living skills, like animal tracking and edible/medicinal plant identification.

Our wilderness trips range from mild to wild, and are custom designed, both prior to departure, and in the field, to meet the changing needs of groups in the backcountry. Our llama trekking guests have ranged from infants to seniors, from experienced mountaineers to self-proclaimed couch potatoes. We welcome all ages and fitness levels. Join us for a truly unforgettable wilderness experience!

Backcountry Gourmet Meals are prepared and served in scenic wilderness locations. Our llamas pack in all the fresh ingredients, to make some of the most spectacular meals anyone has ever eaten in the wilderness. Our menu features a creative and innovative blend of international ethnic cuisine, highlighted by local Southwestern favorites.

Areas of Service and Expertise

Our Llama Trekking Adventures take place in the seldom visited Wilderness Areas of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Rio Grande Gorge, near Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico. We operate under Special Use Permits issued by the Carson and Santa Fe National Forests, and the Taos Field Office of the BLM.

Guides are trained and certified in CPR, Wilderness Medicine, and the highest standard of backcountry client care. The safety and well being of our guests is our primary concern, and we take every precaution to ensure a safe and comfortable wilderness experience for all.

 Eco-Friendly Notes

Llamas are the ultimate low-impact pack animal. They have soft leather padded feet, that leave less of a footprint on fragile wilderness trails. Because llamas browse on vegetation like deer, they are substantially lighter on the land than other pack animals. They make a great conservation teaching aid for young people, and are a constant reminder for us to tread lightly on this magnificent planet we all share.

We are passionate advocates for Wilderness Protection and conservation of our Public Wildlands. WELA works closely with local conservation organizations, resource managers, and elected officials, to protect and preserve New Mexico's natural and cultural heritage for future generations.

We practice and teach "Leave No Trace" Backcountry Travel Ethics, and keep our group sizes small, in order to minimize the level of impact in the areas we visit, and to to provide a high quality authentic wilderness experience for our guests.

All of our llamas have been rescued and rehabilitated from neglected, abandoned, and often dire situations. Because there are so many unwanted llamas in the West, we now operate a Llama Rescue service, to provide homes for these wonderful animals.

 Pet Friendly Notes

We love dogs, but in the wilderness, they tend to chase away local wildlife. They also make the llamas a little nervous. If you are traveling with a pet, ask us about our local doggie spa!
