The cultural resources of Chimney Rock Archaeological Area constitute one of the largest Pueblo II (A.D. 900-1150) communities in southwestern Colorado and one of the finest examples of a Chacoan culture "Outlier.” The Chaco phenomenon was a complex system of dispersed communities bound by economic, political, and religious interdependence. Chimney Rock is considered the northeastern-most outlier of this system and contains many outstanding hallmarks of the Chacoan system. The community is located beneath the prominent Chimney Rock Pinnacles, with dramatic 360° views of the surrounding landscape. The design of the Chimney Rock community incorporated ancestral Puebloan knowledge of astronomy; the pinnacles serving as a frame for viewing some astronomical alignments.  See for additional information.
